Adult Study

At Nelson United Church, we believe that education is for people of all ages and that we never stop learning and growing. To this end, we offer various possibilities for adults to deepen their understanding of the Christian faith, other faiths, the Bible, and the world in which we live. Sometimes we offer programs developed by other organizations, such as Living the Questions, Kerygma or Seasons of the Spirit; and sometimes we develop our own programs and Bible studies. We try to offer a 6-week study in the fall, in Lent, and after Easter. All are welcome!

Merging and Emerging Stories of Our Lives
Start Date: Monday, October 5th
Time: 7 p.m. in Trinity Lounge
This participatory and experiential program will be based on the stories of our lives, our struggles, our joys and celebrations, and our questions. What we are proposing for this 6-week learning opportunity is that we will share our stories and from the stories that we share, we will identify issues that we want to learn more about. For example, perhaps one's story centres around the fact that one is spiritual but not religious; we will explore together what that might mean. Or perhaps you are wondering about all of this modern/post-modern discussion and what that might mean. Or... Speak to David Boyd for more information and to indicate your intention to participate.

Lenten Study – Voluntary Simplicity
Start Date: Monday, February 22nd
Time: 7 p.m. in Trinity Lounge
Mark your calendars for next Lent when we will discuss together how we can voluntarily live more simply.

Thursday Morning Breakfast Book Bunch

Date: Thursday mornings beginning September 17th, 2009
Time: 6:45 a.m. to 8 a.m. over breakfast, which we take turns providing
We gather together early Thursday mornings to talk about a non-fiction spiritual book. This fall we are going to read together Christ of the Celts: The Healing of Creation by J. Phillip Newell. Speak to David Boyd or leave your name with Lois in the church office to order a copy of the book. Any suggestions for what to read after Christ of the Celts?

Review from Publisher's WeeklyMarch, 2008:

Diagnosing the human soul with a longing for peace in the face of fear and fragmentation nurtured by global political forces and fundamentalisms, Newell offers the ancient traditions of Celtic Christianity as a way forward in healing humankind and the earth. An international retreat leader who is the former warden of Scotland's Iona Abbey, the author of Listening for the Heartbeat of God argues we discover unity as we become connected to one another and "allow ourselves to be surprised by the Presence that is within creation and within the human soul." Drawing on ancient and contemporary sources both within and outside the conventional Christian canon, Newell is critical of, and offers alternatives to, ancient Christian doctrines like creation "ex nihilo" (out of nothing), original sin and substitutionary atonement
