Community Opportunities

At Nelson United Church we see ourselves as an "incarnational community." What this means is that we attempt to embody God's love, Christ's ministry of welcome, and the Holy Spirit's inspiration in how we are together. We want to provide opportunities for deepening our sense of community and communion. To this end, there are many opportunities:

Nelson United Church Choir
Time: Thursdays from September to June at 7 p.m.
Music Minister: John Pengelly
The choir practices every Thursday evening from 7 p.m. until about 8:30 p.m., every Sunday morning from 9: 15 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. and sings most Sundays ... from September through June. There are special opportunities for an extended choir at Christmas and Easter and at other times in the church year. You don't need any musical experience other than a desire to sing and the hope for some fun with other like-minded folk.

United Church Women

President: Leah Gray
The UCW, as this group is known, is part of the national structure of the United Church of Canada. The UCW is an opportunity for the women of the church to gather together for companionship, service and a sense of friendship and community. We supposedly have the largest UCW in BC Conference with over 90 women involved in one or another of the units. In our congregation we have 4 UCW units and if you are not already involved in a UCW unit, you are welcome to join. Please contact Leah for more information.

Jubilate Deo Handbell Choir
Time: Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Music Minister: John Pengelly
Ever wanted to ring hand bells? Talk to John and join the handbell choir. While musical experience is an asset, it is not required.

Meet and Eat
Date: last Saturday of each month beginning October 30th
Time & Place: Gather at 5:30 to eat at 6 p.m. in the Church Hall
An opportunity to gather with folk of all ages for fun and food. The Christian Development Committee hosts these pot-luck gatherings and coordinates an activity each month. The purpose is to have fun, develop new friendships, strengthen old friendships, and make connections with others over food and laughter.

Men's Club
Date: The 3rd Tuesday of each month, September through May
Time & Place: 7 p.m. in the Trinity Lounge
A time for men to gather together for fellowship, enjoy slides, pictures and presentations, talk about maintenance and upkeep projects for the church, plan a fall turkey dinner and spring pancake supper, and get together for parties twice a year. Bill Costain is the president and can provide more details.

Prayer Circle
The Prayer Circle is a small group of people who are contacted when specific prayers are requested. These prayer requests are incorporated into the daily prayer life of the participants and are kept confidential. People wishing to make a request or those who are interested in becoming a member of the Prayer Circle can contact Judy Cameron, 250-354-4700 or at jvcameron@shaw.ca.
