NELSON UNITED CHURCH HISTORY

Nelson United Church, as we know it today, was first built in 1908/09 as Trinity Methodist,
replacing a wooden structure at Josephine and Silica.
Two fires, in 1915 and 1967 (when only the choir gowns survived both), tested the resolve
of the congregations, but each time, they rebuilt and improved the structure.

When The United Church of Canada was formed in 1925, Trinity Methodist Church
and St. Paul's Presbyterian Church became United Churches.
In 1955, they amalgamated into Trinity-St. Paul's United Church.
A new congregation, Fairview United Church, was created in May 1958.
These two congregations subsequently amalgamated in 1995 to form Nelson United Church.

NELSON UNITED CHURCH

Since it was built, the present building has had four names: Trinity Methodist; Trinity United; St. Paul's-Trinity and, now, Nelson United Church. The cornerstone, dated 1908, commemorates the original marble building and in 2008 we celebrated with great joy the 100th anniversary of the creation of our church building and over the year recalled the names of the many "saints" who have gone before us to help make us what we are today.

For millennia, First Nations peoples have lived on and cared for this land, their deep connection to it rooted in culture, identity, and spirituality. We respectfully acknowledge that the land on which we gather is the traditional territory of many diverse Indigenous nations located within the intersecting traditional territories of multiple First Nations and is home to diverse Indigenous peoples including the Metis. We recognize the historical and ongoing injustices faced by Indigenous communities. Though we may not fully comprehend the depth of these experiences, we commit ourselves to learning and reflection. We believe that sincere words can open hearts and inspire change. As fellow children of the Creator, we commit to walking the path of reconciliation together.
